ONLY RELATIVELY RECENTLY HAS EVIDENCE FROM EPIDEMIOLOGICAL AND ANIMAL STUDIES EMERGED SUGGESTING THAT FETAL RESPONSES TO THE INTRAUTERINE ENVIRONMENT MAY UNDERLIE THE PREVALENCE OF MANY CHRONIC DISEASES OF ADULTHOOD INCLUDING TYPE 2 (NON-INSULIN-DEPENDENT) DIABETES.
