FURTHERMORE, WE HAVE LIMITED OUR DISCUSSIONS TO THE IMPORTANCE OF OXYTOCIN AND VASOPRESSIN AS TARGETS OF GONADAL STEROIDS AND HOW THESE EFFECTS ARE MODIFIED BY GENETIC AND EXPERIENTIAL SITUATIONS. WHILE RODENTS WILL REMAIN THE DOMINANT MODEL SYSTEM FOR PRECLINICAL STUDIES (ESPECIALLY FOR ADDRESSING COMPLEX BEHAVIOURAL PHENOTYPES), THERE IS SCOPE TO EXPAND CURRENT RESEARCH OF THE MOLECULAR AND EPIGENETIC PATHOLOGIES BY USING INVERTEBRATE MODELS. THE PATHWAY OF RISK FROM CHILDHOOD TRAUMA TO THESE COGNITIVE, EMOTIONAL, AND PSYCHIATRIC OUTCOMES IS ADDRESSED IN TERMS OF POTENTIAL STRUCTURAL AND FUNCTIONAL ALTERATIONS WITHIN THE HIPPOCAMPUS, PREFRONTAL CORTEX, AND AMYGDALA RESULTING FROM CHRONIC OR REPEATED ACTIVATION OF THE HYPOTHALAMIC-PITUITARY-ADRENAL (HPA) AXIS AND ITS INTERACTION WITH AND INFLUENCE ON GENETIC AND EPIGENETIC PROCESSES DURING SENSITIVE PERIODS OF DEVELOPMENT.
