RECENT WORK HAS BEGUN TO SHOW THAT EPIGENETICS PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN ADAPTATION OF ORGANISMS CHALLENGED TO ENVIRONMENTAL STIMULAE. CHANGES TO SO-CALLED EPIGENETIC MARKS SUCH AS HISTONE MODIFICATIONS, DNA METHYLATION AND NON-CODING RNAS RESULT IN ALTERED TRANSCRIPTOMES AND PROTEOMES, WITHOUT DIRECTLY CHANGING THE DNA SEQUENCE. MOREOVER, SOME OF THESE ENVIRONMENTALLY-INDUCED EPIGENETIC CHANGES TEND TO PERSIST OVER GENERATIONS, AND THUS, EPIGENETIC MODIFICATIONS ARE REGARDED AS THE CONDUITS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL INFLUENCE ON THE GENOME. HERE, WE REVIEW THE CURRENT KNOWLEDGE OF POSSIBLE INVOLVEMENT OF EPIGENETICS IN THE CASCADE OF RESPONSES RESULTING FROM ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURE TO IONISING RADIATION. IN THIS PAPER, WE FOCUS ON EXPLORING HOW THE AOP CONCEPT CAN BE USED TO GUIDE RESEARCH AIMED AT IMPROVING BOTH OUR UNDERSTANDING OF CHRONIC TOXICITY, INCLUDING DELAYED TOXICITY AS WELL AS EPIGENETIC AND TRANSGENERATIONAL EFFECTS OF CHEMICALS, AND OUR ABILITY TO PREDICT ADVERSE OUTCOMES. PLATELET ACTIVATION, OXIDATIVE STRESS, INTERPLAY BETWEEN INTERLEUKIN-6 AND TISSUE FACTOR, ALL APPEAR TO BE POTENTIALLY IMPORTANT MECHANISMS IN POLLUTION-MEDIATED THROMBOSIS, TOGETHER WITH AN EMERGING ROLE FOR CIRCULATING MICROVESICLES AND EPIGENETIC CHANGES.OVERALL, THE RECENT LITERATURE SUPPORTS, AND ARGUABLY STRENGTHENS, THE CONTENTION THAT AIR POLLUTION CONTRIBUTES TO CARDIOVASCULAR MORBIDITY BY PROMOTING HAEMOSTASIS. INTERNATIONAL AND NATIONAL GUIDELINES URGE HEALTH PROFESSIONALS TO ADDRESS SDOH IN CLINICAL PRACTICE AND PUBLIC HEALTH.
