THIS HYPOTHESIS HAS BEEN CONTINUALLY SUPPORTED BY EPIDEMIOLOGIC STUDIES AND STUDIES INVOLVING ANIMAL MODELS. IN THIS REVIEW, WE DESCRIBE THE STRUCTURAL, METABOLIC AND EPIGENETIC CHANGES THAT OCCUR IN RESPONSE TO ADVERSE INTRAUTERINE ENVIRONMENTS INCLUDING PRENATAL AND POSTNATAL DIET, MATERNAL OBESITY, AND PREGNANCY COMPLICATIONS.
